Kiefer Technic Showroom Facade

Created by architect Giselbrecht + Partner ZT GmbH this amazing project is called “Dynamic Facade” better known as the Kiefer Technic Showroom in Bad Gleichenberg, Austria

‘Adaptive Fa[ca]de’

Here’s a great project that came out of the Adapative Architecture and Computation programme at the Bartlett School of Architecture. ‘Adaptive Fa[ca]de’ by Marilena Skavara explores the functional possibilities and performative characteristics of cellular automata (CA). In addition to the unique emergent behaviour of CA, a neural network enables a further computational layer to evolve CA behaviour to the context of its surrounding environment.

Building upon the early work of Conway’s ‘Game of life’ and Stephen Wolfram’s extensive research on the wider implementation of CA, ‘Adaptive Fa[ca]de’ becomes a living adapting skin, constantly training itself from the history of its own errors and achievements. For a more detailed description of the project, read Marilena’s article for Vague Terrain.

Theremin Super Mario

Motion controlled gaming’s currently the talk of the town, thanks to the likes of Microsoft’s Project Natal. Now one enterprising Nintendo fan has turned a 1920s musical gadget into a new form of motion-based Mario controller.

The unnamed 24-year-old gamer from Glasgow adapted an old Theremin so that he’s able to use it as a motion-sensing controller for Super Mario Bros.

In his video - shown below - the gamer describes how moving his right hand makes Mario move left or right. By moving his left hand, the gamer added, Mario will either jump or shoot fireballs.

A Theremin contains two metal antennae that, when used for making music, sense the positions of the player’s hands. One antenna controls the frequency, while the other controls the volume. Sounds are pushed out through a loudspeaker. ®

Flash ActionScript with ARToolKit

A kind of new interactive media.

It's presented by AID-DCC. They developed “FLARToolKit,” a ported version of ARToolKit in May 2008.

The “FLARToolKit” has made it possible to suggest a dynamic advertising tool, combining paper materials (the new year’s card) with 3D motions. Changing shapes of markers, 3D objects jumping out of the card, and rhythmical movement of objects are among amazing effects of “Augmented Reality.”

For audiences without web cameras, a demonstration movie (including some extreme examples) is available to give you a feel of this exciting fusion of “real” and “virtual.” The movie is also available on YouTube to stimulate the interest of a-list bloggers.
